Real-Time Safety Monitoring for Coal Mining
THE CHALLENGE
A large company with tens of thousands of employees is engaged in coal mining, which takes place in a quarry— an inherently dangerous environment. Continuous monitoring is required to ensure stability: preventing collapses, keeping personnel out of blast zones, and ensuring operations are conducted within designated three-dimensional areas.
Data is collected from a myriad of sensors across various systems, utilizing different software, all tracking deviations from the norm. This includes survey data, GPS receivers, radars, boreholes, total stations, seismic control points, telemetry from equipment, and radio data from personnel. These data are stored in CAD, journals, and various software platforms across different operating systems.
Due to the numerous data sources and disparate interfaces, dispatchers monitoring this information 24/7 can miss critical alerts, thus endangering safety and efficiency.
TO DO LIST
- Design a unified system
Create a cohesive platform to combine and display data from various sources - Automate data delivery
Streamline the process of gathering data from multiple systems - Develop a web interface
Create an easy-to-use web interface for dispatchers, optimized for large screens and 24/7 operation - Display geospatial data
Integrate a system to visualize spatial data on a map - Add real-time monitoring
Enable real-time tracking of personnel, equipment, and various sensors (pressure, displacement, seismic, fire) - Set up import functionality
Ensure compatibility with different projections for importing CAD and aerial imagery into GIS
solution
- Data Visualization
We proposed a cartographic data visualization approach since most data is spatially referenced. This proved to be the most effective method - Automation
We automated the data delivery process from various systems - User Interface
Developed a simple interface where dispatchers only need to respond to yellow and red alerts, following pre-developed checklists - Interactive Reporting
Created interactive forms for efficient report generation - Real-Time Monitoring
Added a real-time monitoring mode for all subjects - CAD <-> GIS Integration
Configured the import of CAD and aerial imagery into GIS layers, accommodating different projections
