RECYCLING COLLECTION POINTS ON THE MAP – FOR WHAT?
Recycling practices vary widely across different regions. In some areas, you can easily recycle almost any type of material, whether near your home or at public collection points. Other regions may only accept basic materials like plastic, metal, and paper, requiring you to search for specific locations to recycle clothing or electronics. In some places, recycling is just beginning to take root, and finding even a plastic recycling point can be challenging. WasteFreeMap helps users find recycling collection points no matter where they are. It showcases all available open data on recycling points and allows users to add missing information and make corrections.
HOW IT WORKS
Our map integrates up-to-date data from OpenStreetMap (OSM), featuring open information on hundreds of thousands of collection points worldwide. Each point includes its location and the types of materials it accepts. Users can add photos, leave reviews, rate the collection points, and provide schedules. Points can be permanent (such as recycling containers) or temporary, like special recycling events held in cities.
In beta mode, we offer the ability to export some data back to OSM. This means that the information you add not only stays in our service but also contributes to the main repository of spatial data, becoming available in services like Maps.me, Organic Maps and Mapbox.
HOW TO USE
You can access WasteFreeMap from both PCs and mobile devices. There are several modes of use:
- View Points: Simply find the nearest recycling point.
- Add/Update Points: Authorized users can add new points or update existing ones. After moderation, your changes will be available to all.
- Moderate: Organizations responsible for recycling in their regions can become moderators to manage recycling collection points in their designated areas.
CURRENT CHALLENGES
Data coverage in some regions is limited, even though collection points exist. Some information might be outdated, like non-existent containers or incorrect material types. The good news is that anyone can update the map from any device.
